Sneaky Places Where Typos Love To Hide

Typos happen to the best of us at the most inopportune times. Case in point? See if you can spot the typo in Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address chiseled into the chamber wall of the Lincoln Memorial and later corrected.
Luckily for us, correcting typos in digital content is easier than in limestone. Still, when proofing your work, remember to hunt for typos where they hide.

Headlines and Subheads
We recently read an important email announcement from the general manager of a large company. The headline had the company’s industry spelled wrong. Most likely, the email was proofed and reproofed, starting with the body copy rather than the headline.

Charts and Graphs
Copy in charts is often input in design programs lacking simple spell check advantages.

Captions Under Photos and Other Graphic Elements
Remember, people read captions under photos more often than body copy.

URLs or Domain Names
A good practice is to click on or paste the URL into your browser to test for accuracy. Also, using uppercase and lowercase, rather than all lowercase, for URL mash-up names improves readability.
